9A - Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2
I decided to change my opportunity~
My opportunity is an app idea that helps people manage their grocery shopping by letting them search from a database of healthy recipes, showing the nutrition information, then giving them a shopping list with everything they need and how much everything will cost. This can help them better manage their budgets by knowing how much they will be spending on their meals beforehand. In addition, they could clip coupons from their local grocery stores to use. Recipe planning apps are not new, but I think that having the aspect of managing and planning out the cost of groceries would be something that sets this idea apart.
I interviewed mostly college students because I believe that this would be a useful tool for that demographic. Generally people liked the idea of being able to have the convenience to select recipes and have a shopping list given to you. One person I interviewed asked if everything would be on the shopping list, even things like olive oil, flour or spices that people probably already have. This gave me the idea to further the app by letting you input the groceries you already have in your house. That way it can show you recipes that will utilize some of those items, and they will not be on the shopping list. Or, you could search for recipes that will include items you specifically want to use up.
I found that the people that fall outside of my boundary tend to be students that have meal plans, and therefore aren’t buying many groceries. Also, one person told me they prefer to just go to the grocery store and draw cooking inspiration from the items she sees there, rather than planning out her grocery shopping.
Inside the boundary
Who: college students or busy working people
What: convenience in meal planning and grocery budgeting
Why: People need a convenient way to manage groceries
Outside the boundary
Who: People who don’t cook often/prefer to not plan their grocery shopping
What the need is not: it is not a service to provide accessibility for people to transport groceries back and forth from the store
Why: the outsiders' needs do not fall under this app
Hey Jesse, this is a really great idea, I could definitely use something like this in my own life. You also have a good analysis of the people within the boundary of your solution. I definitely fall inside that boundary. You can also try to think of ways to incorporate more people inside the scope by thinking of more services this app can do. Great post!
ReplyDeleteHi Jesse,
ReplyDeleteI really love this idea. I think this idea would help students save money, time and live a healthier lifestyle. I for sure fall inside the boundary. I always have a hard time coming out of the grocery store with what I came in for. I can see this idea becoming very mainstream and easy to incorporate past a student's lifestyle.
This seems like an interesting idea. It certainly would make meal prep easier with it creating a list. The costs would be hard to keep track of since not everyone shops at the same locations and having to keep that information up to date. It could be interesting to build in a rebate type of program too.
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job with this post. I like the opportunity you identified. I enjoy cooking, and try different recipes regularly. There are always one or two ingredients that I forget to purchase when getting ready to cook, and this app would solve that problem. The only feedback I have is that I feel as though you didn’t go into very much detail about the “what” and “why” areas of the assignment. I would have liked to read about your opportunity in greater detail.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea. I would definitely use an app like this to help get my life in order, especially when it comes to my health and eating habits. Everything you wrote is extremely well said and thought out. Great idea
