21 - Reading Reflection No. 2
The book that I chose to read was Thinking, Fast and Slow, by Daniel Kahneman.
1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
The general theme of the book was analyzing two different modes of thinking; system 1, which our quicker and more emotional size of thinking, and system 2, which is more analytical and logical.
2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
Reading Kahneman's book made me analyze the way that I think about things in a way that I hadn't before. Our system 1 of thinking is always taking over subconsciously, and is often 'lazy,' because we want to make quick judgements and decisions even when we don't have all information available. I also realized that most of my memories are based on the emotional side of my experiences. The book helped me to realize when I'm using system 1 or 2 which helps me to take a step back and adjust my focus if need be.
3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
I would want to design an exercise that demonstrates the difference between slow and fast thinking. An example of this exercise is below.
4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectation?
My biggest surprise was realizing how much my quick thinking brain can make incorrect judgements without me even realizing.
Hey Jesse,
ReplyDeletegreat job this week. I think its so great how you're now able to distinguish between slow and fast thinking. I didn't really understand it or give much thought about it until I read your post.
